I Want to Take Care of my Sexual Health

If you're sexually active, it's really important to take good care of your sexual health. Firstly by having safe sex, and secondly, by choosing a long-term method of contraception that's right for you.

Having Safe Sex

Safe sex is a must - even if you're in a monogamous relationship. Being safe is all about being honest with each other, including having an open discussion about contraceptives.

Safe sex means

  • Getting and giving sexual pleasure without putting each other at risk
  • Telling your partner if you think either of you has an STD or STI and should see a doctor

Safe sex isn't just about HIV/AIDS. There are other infections you can get, many of which have no symptoms. You might think your infection has cleared up, but the underlying condition could still be there. The only way to be sure is to visit your doctor or local health clinic (your CLSC in Quebec).

  • Enjoying safer sex
Always use a condom (with spermicide) for vaginal, oral or anal sex, even if you're using another method of contraception, such as the pill.

STD'S and STI'S

These two terms refer to sexually transmitted diseases and sexually transmitted infections. Anyone who has sex can get one - not only those who've had numerous partners.

There are many different types of sexually transmitted diseases and infections. Most STDs and STIs are easily treatable. Some however, have no symptoms so if you're sexually active, it's important to visit your doctor for regular check-ups.

If you're at all worried about having a sexually transmitted disease or infection, go to your doctor or nearest health clinic (your CLSC in Quebec).

Which Contraceptive Will Suit me?

With all the different options available, you should be able to find a long-term method of birth control that suits you.

Contraceptives fall into 3 main categories:

  • Barrier methods, such as a condom or diaphragm, which are designed to stop sperm getting into the womb
  • Hormonal methods, like the pill, which temporarily alter the way your reproductive system works
  • Other, less sophisticated methods such as withdrawal or the rhythm method, which put you at a higher risk for pregnancy
