What Happens At The Pharmacy?

If you want to be sure that your pharmacy has plan B, feel free to call and ask them.

When you get to the counter, the pharmacist will ask you a few questions to make sure that plan B is right for you. You can find a sample of the type of questions you'll be asked in the Pharmacy Prep Kit on this site.

All pharmacists are very knowledgeable about emergency contraception and will treat your request sympathetically and confidentially. If you're nervous that other pharmacy customers may overhear your conversation, you can ask the pharmacist to talk to you in a private or semi-private area. Most pharmacists have a space available for confidential discussions.

How Much Does It Cost?

plan B is approximately $26 plus any counselling/professional fee charged by your pharmacy. It's covered under most, but not all public and private insurance plans in Canada.

Who Can Buy plan B?

Now that you no longer need a prescription for plan B, there are more ways to make sure you have a backup plan on hand.

  • Can I buy plan B before I need it?
Yes. There's always a chance contraception might fail. By already having plan B, you'll have an emergency backup plan ready for such a situation.

  • Will a pharmacy deliver plan B to me?
Usually the pharmacist will want to counsel you and talk to you before giving you plan B. This is for your benefit, so it's best that you visit the pharmacy and talk to your pharmacist. Your conversation will be confidential and will only take 5 or 10 minutes. If for some special reason you can't make it, call and discuss the situation with your pharmacist.

  • Can someone else buy plan B for me?
Yes, but only under very rare circumstances. Call your pharmacistand discuss the situation with him or her.

  • Can my partner purchase plan B?
Usually the pharmacist will want to speak to you directly before giving you plan B. So it's best that you visit the pharmacy yourself and talk to your pharmacist.
